stay
I feel the whispers of angels caress my ear.
They dance around me,
Pulling my eyes from heaven’s light.
For a moment, I dance with them,
Drinking in the chaos of it all.
They’re angels, after all.
They’ll protect me if I fall.
We sang all night
To songs of lies,
And ate our fill
Of violent delights.
We swam in pools
Of glory be,
And never once
Did I think twice,
Nor did I feel fright.
Only freedom.
Only love.
Only light.
How long,
Oh how long,
Can I stay?
Not until I turn away
Do I notice the pain.
My ankles ache,
As my legs start to shake.
My heart’s been running a race
I don’t think it can win.
I look down to find bruises,
To my surprise,
Wrapping every limb
The chains had claimed.
I try not to cry
Because I’m the one that let them in.
How long,
Oh how long,
Would they have let me stay?
I must,
Somehow,
Find healing now,
And begin another day.
