conversations with friends

Abruptly real and unexpectedly relatable. Whether or not you’ve ever had a relationship with a married man, you’ll find that you relate to the main character, Frances, a lot more than you were expecting. This is not an easy read in the sense that it forces you to deal with your own traumas, flaws, and insecurities as you walk through this confusing, emotional journey of love and friendship. It’s honestly one of the most real depictions of relationships I’ve ever read. And I’m reminded why people tend to gravitate towards the rom-coms and “Nicholas Sparks”s of the world. However, if you’re someone who enjoys the cathartic, real-life stories from time to time then you will likely enjoy this story, as well as Frances’s raw perspectives. It in no way encourages adultery or anything of the sort, as one may think. Instead, it explores the psychology of how and why these kinds of relationships sometimes happen. It will leave you rethinking the conventions of relationships, both romantic and platonic, and it makes you realize that we’re all just people trying (and failing) to navigate our own crap half the time.
