city lights

I once met a girl who loved the city so much,

She made others love it too.

The way she spoke of it and its opportunities

Made others see the possibilities in the dazzling lights

And all the potential of the towering heights.

She made others believe that they could be

Everything they wanted to be

Just by believing in the city.

She made them see

That all the hustle and bustle was worth it,

And that it somehow made them feel free.

She helped others understand the city

When even natives couldn’t see

All the beauty it had to offer behind the scenes.

She loved the city so much

She swore she’d be buried before she’d leave.

What if I told you that girl was me?

And what if I told you

That you were my city?
